Know your target audience

When it comes to running a business and attracting customers, one of the most important things is being able to clearly identify who your target audience is. In order to do this, you need to clearly define what your product or service is, that way you know exactly what you're offering.

For example:

  • Lego, in particular the play sets. Target audience: children from 6–12 years old.

  • Rolex: Upper-class people who are looking to be stylish.

  • Wilson Sporting Goods: Everyday people looking to play sports like tennis, golf, and pickleball.

All of these companies have clear target audiences and know exactly who they're selling to. So how do you identify your target audience? First, understand that you need to target a specific audience rather than trying to appeal to everyone. One way to identify your ideal target audience is to test different groups and see which one gets you the most conversions. Alternatively, you can narrow it down by considering factors like these.

For example, if you own a lawn mowing business

  • Sex: Male & Female

  • Age: 30+ (most likely people who own a house)

  • Location: Local area

  • Interests/Values: Want to save time and want someone to mow the grass for them

Now, when making an ad targeting your audience, it can be tailored towards males or females over 30 years old in your local area. You could put up flyers in your area in local shops. The ad could say things like:

"Save time and do more of what you love"

"We mow your lawn so you can do more of what you love."

You play into their interest in avoiding a task they most likely don't want to do, so they can spend time doing more of what they love. Very simple, this is how you identify your target audience and put it into practice to create an ad that helps you convert more customers into clients.
